Blog: When your kids grow out of needing you

I woke up just after 7 a.m. this morning to the sound of my kids dumping a box of Lego onto the living room floor.

Two or three years ago that noise would have catapulted me out of bed in a semi-conscious attempt at damage control that would have probably ended with me stepping on a handful of pieces of Lego Рwhich, as we all know, were put on this earth to inflict parental puncture wounds Рand then swearing as I collapsed on the couch in pain.

This book broke my heart.

I didn’t really know what I was in for when I picked up a copy of The Shock of the Fall. I liked the cover – shallow, sure, but a book jacket makes a big impression on me – and I’m always drawn to stories about family dynamics, about the moments that stitch¬†us together and the ones that tear us apart.
